Biochemistry/Microbiology

Biochemistry is the science dealing with the chemistry of living matter and microbiology is the branch of biology dealing with the structure, function, uses, and modes of existence of microscopic organisms.

The biochemistry/microbiology group conducts research to identify techniques to modify plant cell walls and identify microorganisms that can break down plant cell walls. This research could lead to reductions in the cost of biofuel production by increasing the speed and efficiency of feedstock processing.

Projects
Genetic modification of cell wall and identification of cell wall variations in nature for cost efficient biofuel production
Assessment of the diversity of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms capable of degrading lignocelluloses in rice
